At the earliest temples dedicated to this Greek goddess, snakes were regarded as sacred. Athena may have been the first goddess I felt drawn to as a child. (I was also born a snake in the Chinese zodiac, and hated the negative connotations this seemed to have even in the culture that created their astrology around these animals. Elsewhere on this site I’ve written pieces of how Chinese culture has in general sucked in confronting its own shadows.)
