Pangolin Spirit started as a “simple” watercolour sketch that I used to explore the painting of swirls and “tattoos” on skin. Pangolins are among the most trafficked and endangered animals on earth, so it’s a video that has some information included, even if the composition and style is fantasy.
The spirals on Pangolin Spirit gave me the gumption to paint swirls and labyrinths in a big way for In Lak’ech (below), a painting I had on the drawing board for over a year. I had needed to “level up” before completing it. These lines are NOT plotted before I put pigment to paper, something I’ve not really done before.
And yet, it was easier to do than I thought because I used to draw complicated mazes as a kid. I never imagined I’d reconnect to that skill in this way.
