Daughter

Daughter happened by what feels like divine accident: In the same week of her 9th birthday, my daughter was sleeping in this magical position that echoed an old baby photo of hers… same fingers lightly touching her chin like she was deep in thought. And the covers around her looked very nest-like.

I did what a crazy mum would do… I snapped photos for a painting idea.

It led to an exploration of how nature creates in cycles and spirals, and this includes the shape of an egg as well. The Phi spiral can be drawn ad infinitum, creating new circles along the way whose proportions are related by Phi, at every 90 degrees. 9 is quite a magical number; in numerology, it’s the completion of one cycle, and the beginning of the next.

In an astrology chart, 90 degrees forms a “square” between planets; or, a square between one planet at birth and later on in a transit. Such moments can be a bit of a test and transition period, always to help us grow. Plotting the Phi spiral (where the new, bigger curve is drawn at every 90 degree turn) gave me a new appreciation of this.

My daughter has asked me how the spiral managed to curl perfectly around her ear and face and touch other points on her body. I answered her simply with “I don’t know.” But I hope that sense of wonder is one of the things I get to pass on to her and inspire others to look at reality with fresh eyes.
