The Taproot series was born when I was mulling over generational gifts and curses. All of these small (8 by 11 inch) paintings were first created from the same set of suspended marbling inks on water. On each “printing”, the paint dots and swirls got more and more fine.
The Oxford Dictionary describes taproot as “a straight tapering root growing vertically downwards and forming the centre from which subsidiary rootlets spring”. And of course, roots are how all plants from the smallest grass to the tallest seqoia trees draw water and minerals from the ground. What happens when the soil is poisoned or the taproot is damaged; what happens when new plants have to reach for emotional resources (water) beyond what their families of origin ever had or could provide?
