The Puzzle Box was inspired by reading about the concept of the eight circuits of consciousness, put forward in the 1960s by Timothy Leary, Ph.D. It synthesized both Western and Eastern esoteric ideas into a new model about human consciousness and development.
This is one of the first pieces I’ve done which puts geometry right in the centre of the picture, as opposed to previous paintings in which I may have plotted geometry into the background or not at all.
I didn’t manage to capture all the ideas about the 8 circuits in this piece, but it was a good start, and one which led me to relook at energy practices from both East and West (like Qigong and cosmoFORM) that help people open up their higher circuits, or, their higher ways of understanding reality.
The square and diamond (derived from the vesica pisces again) are both 4-sided shapes, and this way of plotting these shapes together (plotting the square from one “lying down” on one side, to another lying down on its point) actually can be infinitely extended inwards or outwards. The equilateral triangles that help form the sides extend towards the centre of the square but never quite hit it; to me, much like the search for self or God goes ever on. (The number also refers to the 4 elements and is very much connected to the earth plane.)
