Circe

(Watercolours, suminagashi inks, colour pencils, markers, gold paint)

This is probably one of the most experimental pieces I’ve ever done, as it was started by creating a lot of marbled ink pieces with suminagashi that had white areas masked out by randomly torn scrap paper. A lot of “maybe” pieces get produced, this one took a bit of gazing and sketching before the sorceress Circe of Greek mythology was drawn in, along with various animals and animal parts that for me alluded to Circe’s ability to shapeshift. Considering how the ink shapes shift and flow with the water, it seemed apt to pick her as the subject. Markers and colour pencils were used to add in “cells” to add a layer of awareness of how deep such magic would have to reach. Gold to symbolise magic and alchemy.
